Passive Income: Affiliate Marketing Vs Stock Trading

Affiliate Marketing and Stock Trading; two of the most common methods to make money online when you search ‘how to make money online‘ through google.

It is possible to generate a passive income if you are willing to educate yourself, take a few risks and invest some of your time and resources into a project. There are different ways to generate a passive income and you need to choose the right approach in function of your skills and resources.

Selling products via affiliate marketing programs and investing in stocks are two popular methods to generate an additional income, but which one is the best for you?

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Most online retailers offer affiliate marketing programs. Once you join one of these programs, you will be given reference links that you can share on your site, blog or social media pages. You will earn a commission every time a shopper purchases a product after following one of your reference links.

Here is what you can do with one of the biggest programs of affiliate marketing, the amazon affiliate program.

What Is Stock Trading?

Stock trading consists in purchasing shares of companies. You can keep these stocks on the long-term and wait for them to gain value or decide to trade stocks on a daily or weekly basis to generate a quick profit. You can earn a profit by reselling shares of a company after the company has gained value or after the demand for the stock you possess has gone up.

Here is an example of a popular trading platform, plus500.

Which Approach Is Best For You?

This really depends on what your skills are. If you are good with managing investments and know what to look for when choosing stocks, you could make money with trading.

On the other hand, if you are good at getting people interested in a product and like creating web content such as articles, videos and images, joining an affiliate marketing program could be a better option. There is a learning curve with both options but you will probably have to invest more time to learn about stock trading compared to affiliate marketing.

Which Method Will Help You Earn The Most?

You can potentially generate a steady income with both approaches. It is possible to earn a lot with affiliate marketing if you sell expensive items or manage to create a site that gets a lot of traffic and generates a lot of sales.

Stock trading can yield high returns if you make the right decision but keep in mind that there are some risks involved and that you might lose the money you invested. There are a lot of factors that are difficult to predict and that could affect the value of the stocks you decide to invest in.

Affiliate Marketing Vs. Stock Trading

Both approaches have their pros and cons but both methods require you to educate yourself and invest some of your time to either learn about trading or selling.

You can generate a passive income with affiliate marketing but you will still have to work on creating web content to promote your links and stock trading also require you to study the market and keep up with the latest trends.

Affiliate marketing is a better option if you want to avoid stress and don’t want to risk any money, but you should consider stock trading if you are willing to take risks and want higher potential returns.

How To Get Started With Either

Stock Trading– Do your research. There are a lot of brokers out there, some good and some that will scam you. It is up to you to just simply google ‘broker’ reviews and check up how many people have tried it and what their experience is.

Adapt to a strict strategy and trade with confidence and you will see success.

Affiliate Marketing– The best possible way to start this is with a website. With a website, there is unlimited potential with what you can do, from blogs to advertisement which will monetise your site to earn commissions.

  1. I have a bit of experience in both. For stock trading I go with the approach of trying to buy companies and hold onto them, then earning passive income from dividends or selling after a while without constantly trading. Otherwise I find that there is too much time involved and it is not quite feasible when I have a day job as well.

    • Hey there Daniel,

If you have experience in both passive income methods, then you’d agree with me that both of them are not easy. However for stocks you will need a large capital to start with and it is extremely risky if you do not do day trading or enough research. Affiliate marketing could potentially even replace your day job and that is why it is my top recommendation and Wealthy Affiliate would teach you everything you need to know about it.

      Thanks, Ken
