The common mistakes, watch out and avoid!

Many people dream of making money from the comfort of their own home and have the freedom to work when they want.

There are very few people who go ahead and achieve this dream.

This is due to the fact that there is a lot that goes into starting a successful business online. The good thing is that you can easily start to make a profit online by doing the right thing. There is a lot of information out there and it can be a challenge to know what to follow. Below are some mistakes that many people make when starting an online business.

Not having a plan

planYou don’t need to have a business plan to start an online business, but you need a plan that will guide you through.

Many people see having a business plan as homework and they decide to avoid it.

The big format business plan is growing obsolete, there is no need of a 20-page business plan to succeed in starting and running a successful business online. A plan helps you know who you are selling to, and what people are willing to pay for your products or services.

This will also help you know how much money you have and how long it will last.

Focusing too much on the little stuff

You first need to get your business off the ground before you can start thinking about other things.

Many people starting an online business are usually bogged down by the details and can sometimes cost them because they will have less time to concentrate on important issues.

If you spend too much time on your logo design or how you want your business to look like, you will be wasting a lot of time. Spend more time on things that will take your business to the next level.

Don’t worry about money!

moneyYou have the luxury of being optimistic on everything else expect money. There is a good chance you will run out of money before your business start to make any.

Know how much you need to run your business, your burn rate, and a way to get more money before you can run out.

Many people tend to scramble to raise money when it is already too late. All factors should be put into considerations to ensure you are ready to face everything that may come up. Know how far the money you have will go.

This means you will have to set the pricing right to ensure you are making a profit.

Ignoring customer service

The transactions will be happening online, and it is important to remember that your customers are people who will more likely return if they have a good experience. Ensure there is a way of interacting with the people when they visit your site.

Monitor social media sites and see what people are saying about your business. Review sites like Yelp can also help you know who is not happy with his/her experience and reach out.

Giving too much away but not getting anything in return

Before you have established credibility as a seller or an expert, you can offer something for free to turn a potential customer into a long-term customer, especially if your business offers services.

The cost of offering free products can add up, so you should think about offering something intangible in exchange for the customer’s email address. Some common things you can give out are webinar, eBook, recipe, guide or checklist etc.

Spreading yourself too thin on social media

When starting out building your brand and marketing, try out the one or two main social media platforms of your target market. This will enable you to start out with a small budget and track results before investing more.

It is never a good idea to blow your advertising budget when starting out.

Thinking one size fits all

Just because a strategy or product worked for one company doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Be skeptic about what you read and see as successful elsewhere. If there is a way of testing something new without having to spend a lot of money, then you can try it out.

Ensure you have evaluated all the possible risks before making the decision.

  1. What you mention about many people never achieving to get their business up and running is so true. Many consider it but never take action and those that do tend to attack it without any plan.

I totally agree with how you mentioned about having a plan, taking proper time and where you place that time and watching the money flow for expenses to carry your business through until you start to make money.

All great tips as well as your Wealthy Affiliate recommendation.

    • Hey Travis glad you agree with what I think as well. If all these mistakes are avoided when you start your online business, you should see success very much sooner! Have a great one 🙂
